The other day, I heard the phrase, “You won’t be replaced by AI, but you will be replaced by someone who uses AI.” I find myself agreeing with this sentiment, particularly in the context of the future of work. To me, AI isn’t meant to replace us; it’s designed to boost the productivity of those who know how to use it effectively. In many ways, this idea isn’t new; it’s similar to how calculators were once viewed as disruptive technology, but are now regarded as indispensable tools that have made us more efficient and capable, rather than a threat to jobs.
AI - The New Calculator
The other day, I was helping my daughter with her math homework, and I found myself using the traditional methods for solving equations – methods I still remember well. While this approach works for helping her understand the process, personally, I would rely on a calculator. A calculator doesn’t replace the process; it enhances efficiency when used correctly. This same principle can be applied to AI: if used the right way, AI can enhance our capabilities rather than replace us.
Before calculators (as I re-discovered using traditional methods to help my daughter), performing complex calculations was not only time-consuming but also prone to human error. When calculators were first introduced, many feared they would replace mathematicians and accountants. However, calculators ended up being a tool that allowed those who used them to work faster and more accurately; they didn’t replace the job, they made it more efficient. Similarly, AI, when properly applied, can enhance our productivity without taking over our roles.
AI is a Tool, Not a Replacement
Just like calculators were once perceived as threatening, AI is often misunderstood as a replacement for humans. In reality, AI is simply a tool, much like the calculator. It’s not meant to replace human intelligence or creativity but to augment it.
Take doctors, for example. AI is not replacing doctors, but rather helping them make faster, more accurate diagnoses. In marketing, AI doesn’t replace marketers; it automates mundane tasks, analyzes data efficiently, and improves campaign targeting. In art, AI isn’t replacing artists, but enabling them to explore new creative possibilities. The list goes on: from customer service, ordering fast food in the drive-in, to logistics. AI is simply empowering people to do their jobs better, much like how calculators enhanced our ability to perform complex mathematical tasks.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen some people fall into the trap of letting AI handle more and more of their decision-making. I’ve often noticed when AI has written documents, presentations, or blogs for individuals. The true power of AI lies in enhancing your capabilities, not replacing them. AI is a tool designed to improve efficiency – it can process data faster, automate tasks, and provide insights. But the final decisions and creativity should always come from you.
Don 't Worry About AI Replacing You
The phrase, “You won’t be replaced by AI, but you will be replaced by someone who uses AI,” underscores an important truth about the future of work. A more fitting analogy might be: “You won’t be replaced by AI, but you could be replaced by someone who leverages it, similar to how workers in manufacturing were transformed (or replaced) by robots.”
Consider the impact of robots in manufacturing. While they didn’t eliminate the need for human workers, they dramatically increased productivity and transformed the industry. Roles weren’t made obsolete; instead, they were reshaped. Workers who adapted to working alongside robots thrived, while those who didn’t were left behind. And, of course, someone still had to maintain, program, and repair the robots when they broke down. Similarly, AI won’t fully replace human workers. Instead, it will reshape industries and job roles.
Those who embrace AI and use it to enhance their productivity will advance, while those who resist or fail to adapt may find themselves outpaced by others who leverage AI to amplify their work.
Why You Can’t Afford to Ignore AI
In the past, those who resisted using calculators, machinery, tools, and robots were left behind by those who embraced the technology. The same is happening with AI today. AI might seem distant or complex, but it’s quickly becoming an essential skill across industries. Here’s why:
- Speed and Efficiency: Just like calculators made complex math faster, AI automates repetitive tasks and accelerates decision-making. AI can help you work smarter, not harder.
- Better Decision-Making: AI tools analyze vast amounts of data quickly and accurately. They can spot trends, anomalies, and patterns that might go unnoticed. With AI, you can make more informed decisions faster. However, just as with traditional research, it’s important to validate the information. While AI can process data quickly, it doesn’t always guarantee accuracy. Always double-check the results before making critical decisions.
- Competitive Advantage: In the same way that those who used calculators had a competitive edge, those who embrace AI will have an advantage in the job market. If you aren’t using AI to automate or improve tasks, someone else will and they may outperform you.
- New Opportunities: As AI becomes more prevalent, like other advances in technology, new careers and industries will emerge, just as new roles appeared when calculators became mainstream. Understanding AI now places you in a good position for future opportunities.
How to Embrace AI and Stay Competitive
Just as learning new skills is important for staying competitive in certain jobs, using AI efficiently and responsibly will be key for the future workforce. Make sure you understand and follow your company’s acceptable use policies before incorporating AI into your workflow. Here are some thoughts on how you can get started with AI:
1. Invest in Learning
Just like you learned how to use a calculator, play a video game, or navigate a tablet, you can start learning how AI works. There are plenty of online resources, courses, and tutorials available to help you grasp the basics of AI and how it can be applied in your field.
2. Use AI Tools in Your Work
A growing number of AI tools are available across various industries. From writing assistants to predictive analytics, where appropriate and in alignment with your corporate policy, start integrating AI into your daily tasks to enhance productivity and improve outcomes.
3. Adaptability is Key
When I mentored young people in technology, I always emphasized the importance of being adaptable and, at times, reinventing yourself. These same principles are essential in the age of AI. Thriving isn’t about resisting AI; it’s about maintaining a balance, embracing it while still thinking for yourself. Just like calculators and other technological advancements are no longer seen as threats to your career, you should view AI as a tool that enhances your capabilities, not replaces them. The real threat to your career is becoming obsolete
4. Stay Curious and Experiment
Just as those who embraced changes in technology experimented with new ways to use this technology, my encouragement is to do the same with AI, ethically. The more you experiment and learn, the more you will see how it can assist you with your day-to-day tasks.
AI — Another Tool in Your Toolbelt
The phrase “You won’t be replaced by AI, but you will be replaced by someone who uses AI” serves as a call to action. Just as past technological advancements were once seen as threats, AI is often viewed as a threat to jobs today. However, the real opportunity lies in how AI can enhance our capabilities, making us more efficient, accurate, and creative. Just like calculators didn’t replace mathematicians, AI shouldn’t replace you. Instead, those who learn to use it effectively will likely gain an advantage. The future isn’t about competing with machines; it’s about collaborating with them to unlock new potential.
